Civil Engineering | Tips On How To Be Civil Engineering Student - Part 2

I feel the need to continue the previous post (link) that I wrote years ago. In this post, I am going to write about what a student needs to do/to have to be a better engineer when they graduate. This post will be helpful to students out there to start preparing themself and start to set their mind to think like an engineer. A better engineer. These are the things that I wish people told me back when I was a student. So, I am sharing with all the future young engineers out there so that you can be well prepared.
1. Choose The Right Path for Yourself
So, the first thing you need to do is think about where you want to stand 10 years, 20 years and 30 years from now. Is engineering really for you? Nobody can answer this. The best thing you can do is to believe in your ability and strive forward. You are already a step forward into the game. But dear student, make sure that you, yourself have the interest to study engineering. Make sure you do some research on anything related to civil engineering. Don't decide just because your friend going to study engineering. This field of study is challenging and can be mentally draining.
Before you enter the ring, make sure you are properly prepared. Ask people around you what they know about "Civil Engineering" and where this path will take you. Ask your teacher, brother, sister, parents, senior or even friends. For me, it is okay for you to try first if it is not for you, then you can quit. Don't be ashamed of yourself. There is something suitable for you out there.
As brief as possible, Civil Engineering is a field of engineering where you deal with design, build, construction, supervise, and maintain civil works, structure works, and geotechnical works. Basically, civil engineering builds everything around us. Houses, roads, bridges, dams, power plants, and many more. In recent years, Civil Engineers need to comply with sustainably, environmental concerns and economic development. To learn more about civil engineering's branches, you may read on BEM's website (link). There are a lot of misconceptions about Civil Engineering and Architecture. Some people who are not exposed to this field will probably think that Civil Engineering is just the same as Architecture as long as they 'build houses'. But, as a metaphor, Civil Engineers design the structure of the body (bones) meanwhile, architects design our outer body i.e., the position of the nose, eyes, lips, and skin colour.
2. Study Smart, Don't Study Hard
It is very important for the students to understand what they are learning instead of learning for the sake of examination. It is because, once you are working in this field, especially in the consultancy field, it will be difficult and you need to spend more time just to revise everything.
3. Understand VS Memorizing: Don't Memorize Everything!
As long as you understand what you learned in school, it will be easy for you once you working. Especially when you need to start to compare and analyse why 'this' or 'that' happens and how to resolve it based on the knowledge you have. In engineering, you will never stop learning even when you start working. As an engineer, your responsibility is huge, any mistake will lead to many problems later. But at the same time, it is okay to make mistakes as long as you acknowledge it. Of course, it will be impossible to remember everything you learned especially all the acts of conduct or requirements from authorities. But the more you do it, the more you realise it "Ohh, I have read somewhere that this can't be done because based on this Eurocode....... Let me check which section is it and share it with you for reference".
4. Keep On Developing Software Skills
Learn to use software like AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, MiTS, STAAD Pro, and many more which are essential for designing and analyzing structures. Get hands-on experience with lab equipment and construction techniques to understand real-world applications.
5. Learn How To Read Engineering Drawings
Spend more time on how to read and understand engineering drawings. You need to start to learn to read and understand engineering drawings. More or less, you need to know how to imagine how it works. For starters, I personally think an engineer needs to learn to do drafting on your own so that you will know how to properly know whether something you draw can be done on-site or not. Everything is practical.
6. Common Sense
For me, this is one of the core factors of being a good civil engineer. Civil engineers must possess good common sense because their work directly impacts the safety, functionality, and sustainability of infrastructure. It is like trying to apply some logical thinking while designing and making decisions. By applying some common sense during the design stage, we ensure practicality, cost-effectiveness, and safety. Big drains don't mean that they have a good drainage system. Vice versa. After working for 4 years as a Civil engineer, there are a lot of civil engineers who lack common sense, and it makes the work more difficult.
8. Do Not be Afraid To Be Dirty and To be Under the Sun At the Construction Site
You must set this on your mind, even though you already decided you will work as an authority or consultant thinking that you won't go to the site, you are wrong. You still need to go to the construction site. It is the nature of the field you choose. But it will be not as often as working full-time on-site. As long as you can do this, it is okay to continue. You can bring an umbrella to the site it will never look weird. I have done it a lot, with my bright pink umbrella 😂 We must save our skin from skin cancer right?
9. Think Creative and Flexible. Not All Things Will Only Have One Solution
As a civil engineering student, it’s crucial to develop a creative and flexible mindset. Engineering challenges rarely have a single solution, and the ability to think outside the box often sets great engineers apart. Civil engineering problems are diverse, ranging from designing structures to solving unexpected site conditions. Each project presents unique constraints, such as budget, materials, and environmental factors. A rigid approach may overlook innovative or more efficient solutions.
For instance, a bridge design could incorporate different materials (steel, concrete, or composite) depending on the site conditions, budget, and intended use. Thinking creatively allows you to evaluate all options and choose the best fit for the scenario.
Additionally, flexibility is essential when dealing with on-site challenges, such as unforeseen soil conditions or sudden design modifications requested by clients. A flexible engineer adapts quickly, reassesses the situation, and devises alternative solutions. There is no right or wrong in Civil Engineering. Everything needs to be adjusted according to its constraints. But during learning in University, of course, there will be right or wrong answers. But it is to test your ability to understand the topic.
10. Work Under Pressure
Civil engineers often work under pressure because the responsibilities involve high stakes, tight deadlines, and multiple challenges. This can be felt as early as being a Civil Engineering major student but the pressure is not as high during work. But as long as you have great courage and passion in this field it is manageable as you will be able to find a diamond in a rough.
More or less, this is what I know and I can share so far. Maybe later in the future, there will be a lot more I can share with all the future engineers out there as I grow to have more knowledge in this field.

WOW, my last update was in August 2019! Life was so hectic for me since 2019 because I was in my final semester to finish my studies. Alhamdulillah, I managed to complete my studies in January 2020. I successfully finished my final semester with flying colour results. Fast forward, I managed to secure a job as a Civil Engineer at a sub-contractor company.
At first, I find it was quite challenging for me to be in the construction site for the whole day. I was and still worried about my own safety and even thinking to buy myself a pepper spray. They said to not trust anyone 100% onsite. No matter if they are construction workers or the staff. I hope you know what I mean, working around men all the time. Sometimes, I need to be onsite until night. This challenging working environment is seriously mentally drained. If I am not used to working this hard, I would quit my job after a week started working.
But lucky for me, I found myself a very kind and helpful boss and senior where I am not afraid to ask questions and to make a mistake. FYI, I made a lot of mistakes but they said that everything will be fine since I am still learning. Alhamdulillah.
Other than that, I still managed to keep drawing since drawing is still and will always be my hobby. Hoping that I can find some times to post my artworks here. Actually, writing in this blog is not for popularity or anything, but for myself. It is a diary where everyone can read. The posts in this blog were my past memories, good or bad.
I seriously hope that I can still be committed to this blog in the future. Post more with helpful content for engineering students. For me, I love to have someone who is willing to share with the students since the students need to be more exposed to the industries and to help them to choose their course for further their studies or to choose a career path. So, those who want to ask me questions. I am more willing to help you by sending me an email or contact me through my social media accounts. My nosiness might be helping someone to choose their path wisely.

Civil Engineering | Survey Camp At Kem MSN Saujana Asahan, Melaka

I have been wanting to share my experiences when I went to the survey camp for a very long time ago. It was the last field trip for degree and I was super excited. The pre-requisite subject that the student needs to take before attend this survey camp is Geomatics Engineering. In my case, since I was a diploma student, I didn't have to take this subject anymore for a degree. So, my skills in surveying have rusted and need to be polished. But, since I revised by reading the notes and do some calculations. The camp was held for 10 days, and there were 4 sessions with a different date.

- Levelling/Two-Peg Test (Staff, bubble, measuring tape and electronic level, tripod)
- Traverse (tripod, prism, total station, measuring tape, nails and picket)
- Tachymetry (tripod, prism, total station, nails and picket)
- Setting Out (tripod, prism, total station, measuring tape, nails and picket)
Thank god that I don't forget to bring along my calculator, notebook, laptop, and a copy of lecture notes because I might have some difficulties if I forget to bring these. A laptop still needed although the report needs to be done by using handwriting because it was needed to process the data by using SDR Mapping and AutoCAD.

- Medicine (fever, flu, pain reliever, allergy, etc)
- Skincare (sunblock, moisturizer, face wash, etc)
- Sanitary pad
- Mineral water and food (Instant noodles, bread, and biscuits)
- Iron and water boiler
- Shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrush and powder/liquid detergent
When I was at the survey camp, I always feel so hungry since we were working for the whole day. We ate at the dining hall and the food served as a buffet. So, you know what comes next. Always be prepared. Other than that, to save space for my bag, I brought just a few clothes and wash the clothes every day. So, I don't have so many dirty clothes at the end of the survey camp.
I choose session 4 (the last session) and it was the best. All the students were separated by a group of 5 or 6 students. It was fun although it was tiring and exhausting at the moment because I had to carry heavy instruments every day.

This was my every day's view. I was so lucky because my group was placed near the lake with the mountain view. The sunrise and sunset were so breathtaking. But, near my working area, there were no trees to keep myself away from the sunlight. It was hella hot at noon.

After I went back to UTHM, I was so determined to do something related to Surveying for my Final Year Project. Dream comes true! hahaha! So this was my experience in Survey Camp. How about you? Do you have any camp for your course while studying at university?

Lately, I have taken my time and holiday to be an intern at the Civil and Structural Engineering firm somewhere in Malaysia. Well, from what I can say, there are so many bad and good things happen around me recently. Working as an intern here is completely different like when I was an intern at Sime Darby. Probably because this is a C&S firm and Sime Darby is a developer company. You can read about my experience when I was an intern at Sime Darby. (Link)

At here, I can implement most of the subjects that I have learned in my studies. Especially for all the design subjects (foundation engineering, hydrology, hydraulics, highway & traffic engineering, reinforced concrete 1&2, and many more). I learned how to correct the drawing by using AutoCAD and some other similar software, which is ZWCAD. To be honest, I was so afraid to be an intern here since this professional field of work requires a lot of knowledge and imaginations. As an engineer, I need to design the structure that can withstand for a very long time. One single mistake can cause fatality. It is a very long process to achieve the best design for a project. But the thing is, I learned a lot from the engineers here. They always guide me with their best effort. I feel so thankful to them and they got my respect.
There are so much more of the things that I can learn here because I just started internship last 30th June. I can assure you that there will be much more to share with you guys later!

Last semester, 2nd-semester 2nd year, my course make a field trip to Sungai Lembing, Pahang. The trip was for 3 days and 2 night. The main purpose of this trip was to expose to student the real-life experience so that student could figure out the application of the theory that they have learned in class and could properly understand engineering geology. During the trip, we gets to learn how to use the equipment properly, especially the compass and Schmidt hammer. During the trip, we could enhance our knowledge in engineering geology while visiting several places for sightseeing as well as enhancing knowledge about the places that have been visited.
The first stop was at Ayer Hitam, Johor for data taking and also to find the geological properties of the slope near the work area.

The hand was struggling to get the dip direction of the slope based on the compass. hahaha
After that, we moved to Sungai Lembing, Pahang and the trip taking the whole day. It was so exhausting because I only sleep inside the bus for the whole day. We arrived at Sungai Lembing at 5 or 6 pm, then get registered to our room and get to rest before the briefing at night.

Next day, We went to Sungai Lembing Museum for mineral hunting activities. We just went inside the museum to find the answers from the quiz given by the lecturer. Hahaha, after get the answers, I just went to the cool place and sit under the aircond until further notice from the lecturer. It was so freaking hot that day and I couldn't stand the heat.
After that, we moved to Bukit Charas, Sungai Lembing and went inside the cave to study the rock structures, the minerals and many more. But, it was so exhausting because I need to climb the stairs. The activity was to identify the chemical Sedimentary rock formation.

Later in the afternoon, we went to Sungai Lembing Mines. The best part of the trip I guess. I get to ride the gerabak and it was so fun. Hahaha, I back being a 13 years old Nana that day. But, that day, I was drenched with the water drops inside the mines. The perks of being a Civil Engineering student.

FYI, the mines is a tourism area, so that day, we always get asked where we are from and what are we doing. Hahaha, People went into the mines only for sightseeing but we even read a book inside the mines to understand the data taking procedures.
The last day, we went to Black Stone Beach at Kuantan, Pahang for Identification on the weathering effect on Basalt rock. We just need to bring back a few rocks for the strength tests later in the lab.

For sure, we were exposed to the real-life experience of a geologist. The trip was so fun and memorable. The good thing is my programme always have field trips almost every semester. Learning Civil Engineering is fun.
Civil Engineering | Tips Untuk Menjadi Pelajar Kejuruteraan Awam

Assalamualaikum and Hello readers!
Malam ni aku ada idea pulak nak post apa kan. Untuk pelajar baru yang berjaya masuk IPT tu tahniah la ya, lagi-lagi kalau dapat Kejuruteraan Awam aka Civil Engineering. Kalau kat UTHM, ada 2 jenis Civil ni. Satu pure Civil Engineering, dan satu lagi Technology In Civil Engineering. Bezanya tak banyak pun. Pure banyak teori manakala techno pula banyak praktikal dan jugak lebih kepada alatan. So, basically belajar benda yang sama je. Cuma tambah tolak sikit je. Some people said that Civil Engineering is the most easiest engineering. Sebab aku tak pernah pun study bidang engineering lain.
Iya lah tu kot. Kalau mechanical and electrical tu korang belajar benda yang tak nampak. Kena bayangkan benda tu. Civil belajar pasal pembinaan, air and environment. Aku pun belum habis belajar lagi. Civil Engineering ni luas bidangnya.
1. Bukan macam Drama.
Kalau korang amik sebab nampak cool macam drama tu, lupakan lah. Lagi-lagi kalau tengok cerita sembilu dulu. Yang engineer bawak scroll banyak-banyak tu. Itu semua tipu. Yang bawak gulung-gulung tu semua arkitek. Civil engineer semua bawak dah lipat dah. Tak pun bawak blueprint je (kata lec aku lah). Kang terbang kat site nanti dah terkejar-kejar nak amik balik tu. Tak rasa macam kelakar ke? Dulu aku memang rasa engineer bawak tu aku rasa memang tu lah yang dia bawak. Tapi sejak lecturer cerita rasa benda tu jadi lawak sangat. Tak ada nya kau pergi kelas pakai baju smart bagai. Kalau classmate aku tu kadang-kadang aku perasan dekat seminggu pakai seluar yang sama. Takde nya pergi kelas rajin nye pakai kemeja lengan panjang siap ber-tie bagai melainkan kalau ada presentation je. Barulah semuanya nampak wow!
2. Tahan Panas.
Kalau mechanical dan electrical banyak kerja kat dalam. Sem ni aku ada amali luar. First amali kat luar dalam jerebu. Sepanjang hari aku asyik bersin je, sudahlah baju bengkel tu tebal. Sabar je lah. Lepas tu aku bawak lah kipas tangan. Bukannya guna pun. Tak sempat pun sebab sibuk kehulu kehilir pegang alat nak mengukur. Boleh pulak lecturer amik kipas aku tu dia guna. siap cakap, "Ni apa engineer pakai kipas". Lepas tu dah semua kawan aku tanya "Nana, tu bukan kipas kau ke?". Hahaha, layan kan je lah lecturer aku ni. Tapi aku suka buat amali kat luar ni walaupun panas. Walupun nampak macam aku ni tak tahan panas tapi aku suka belajar nak gunakan alat macam total station, staff, prism and else.
3. Fizik, Fizik dan Fizik.
Kalau dah namanya engineering ni memang tak dapat lari lah dari Fizik. Aku sem 1 dan 2 ada Fizik. Lepas tu punya lah gembira sem 3 takde fizik sekali hancur punah musnah segala harapan aku sebab setiap subjek ada terselit fizik. Rasa hampa je. Tapi kejap je lah, lepas tu kena move on kang hancur punah musnah pulak nanti pointer sem ni. Huhuhu, jangan jangan jangan.
4. Matematik Tambahan.
Sebenarnya, matematik tambahan tu ada kat algebra dan matematik engineering 1 je. Setelah tu takde kene mengena dah. Add math ni basic je. Bayangkan lah matematik engineering untuk degree ada sampai 4 kalau tak silap aku. Hahahha, hadap la ye nana oiii. Sem ni punya math eng 2 ada 2-3 mukasurat untuk jawapan je. Untuk degree pula ada sampai 4 Civil Engineering Mathematics. So, semoga berjaya lah ye
5. AUTOCAD
Yang gembiranya, civil engineering takyah hadap autocad ni banyak-banyak kali macam architecture. Civil tak guna banyak pun. Sem lepas aku sampai tak tidur malam hanya sebab nak siapkan drawing autocad ni. Tapi pada aku, drawing guna autocad lagi senang dari draw manually guna tangan. Tu lagi lah boleh membuatkan hilang sabar. Salah sikit je kena buat semuanya semula. Aku kan reti guna photoshop so, aku takde masalah untuk draw line dan tools kat autocad tu sebab dah biasa tengok. Cuma autocad ni lebih detail kat skala. Kalau photoshop takda set panjang nak berapa meter ke apa. Pada aku lebih kurang sama je autocad dengan photoshop ni. Cuma photoshop ni untuk arts. Software yang akan banyak digunakan in real life ialah ESTEEM, StaadPro, Microsoft Project, Hecras, dan sebagainya.
Kalau tak minat, boleh cuba minat. Mesti ada benda yang boleh menarik minat korang. Aku pun sedang mencuba. Perjalanan hidup aku sebagai pelajar Civil engineering pun masih jauh lagi. Doakan aku supaya berjaya dalam bidang yang parents aku pilih untuk aku. (mama cakap aku ganas so sesuailah amik ni). huhuhuhu, insyaAllah. Amin.... Lain hari aku share topik yang sama tapi benda lain pulak ye.
